Stress causes a plethora of illnesses that are absolutely preventable!
Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances. How we respond dictates if STRESS WILL KILL YOU. There is also good stress, called eustress. This kind of stress motivates you to get things done and doesn’t adversely affect you or your health.
Distress has many adverse side effects that can ultimately contribute to the onset of many diseases. If how we respond to stress is what is ultimately what will dictate whether or not stress will be our demise, we need to take a look at our coping mechanisms.
I would allow stress to run my life, thinking that, this was only temporary. This is a dangerous relationship to have with stress. I would get through this challenging moment and life would go back to be fine and dandy. What I fail to understand that this will happen again. Life will go wrong, and how I react would never change if I get ahead of it to understand and change my habit. I was told early in life, life gets so fucking hard as you get older and IT DOES- exponentially. Life throws some car-sized lemons at you and you have to catch it or be squashed. If you don’t have some strong coping mechanisms in place for yourself, you may be screwed, and stress may just kill you.
More importantly, will you let it?
How does stress feel?
Everyone is different so stress will register differently for some. The general side effects of stress are increased heart rate, feeling of panic, headaches, and stomach pain. It is important to really listen to your body and how it registers stress. For some it feels like you forgot your phone at home, others it feels like an elephant is sitting on your chest and you can’t find the dang elephant to fix the problem.
What is stressing you out?
Something is!* Identify the trigger and how it is making you feel. Is it the homework you waited to complete until last minute? Is rent due and you don’t have all the money to pay it? Did you get into a car accident? Take a moment to determine what it is and then you can do something about it.
Great! You are almost halfway there to achieving a better understand how stress works and what you can do to combat it!
*IF- you have an anxiety disorder, it is important to recognize the early signs of a panic attack so you can get ahead of a full out break down. Panic disorders/Anxiety disorders can ruin lives if the person doesn’t have the support system necessary to understand it to help in addition to understanding it yourself to be in control of the angst.
I personally struggle with anxiety on a huge level and am constantly working on ways to be in more control of these moments!

What are your coping mechanisms?
Have you ever heard the saying, “Don’t drink to feel better, drink to feel even better.” It is so true! You do not want a negative coping mechanism to become with how you deal with what life throws you. Ask yourself, what proactive ways do you cope with your stress? Do you exercise, write, paint, sing- what do you do? If you don’t have an answer to that question, I implore you to get out into the world and find yourself, or at least something that you can express yourself in. Writing, for me, has always been how I have done so.
- Take a walk
- Pet a dog- trust me on this one 😉
- Meditate (scientifically proven to reduce stress and to help one cope)
It is important to understand that you will never cure yourself of having or experiencing stress, we must just change our relationship with it and how we deal. To do so, start by learning about yourself and how you currently deal with stress to then understand what to do to help you deal with it in more of a healthy manner.
Remember, stress WILL KILL YOU if you let it. Remember that you will more than likely live through what is causing you panic. So, next time you find yourself feeling like you are at the end of your world because of STRESS, write on a top of a blank sheet of paper:
WILL I LET THIS KILL ME?
Underneath it, write what is causing you stress and truly wonder and ask yourself that question.
The most successful people hit a rock-bottom low before they shoot right up to the top. So, will you allow this moment to hold you down for good? NO! You will fight because that is what humans have done for centuries to survive.
Don’t be your biggest enemy and ultimate limiting factor- and DON’T LET STRESS KILL YOU!
